Cardiogenic shock is associated with an unacceptably high mortality and morbidity among hospitalized patients, which has not changed in the past three decades. Despite recent consensus statements on classification and management, there remains variability among centers in approaching and managing patients with cardiogenic shock. In this session, we will discuss the definition and utility of the SCAI classification of cardiogenic shock; the various temporary mechanical circulatory support devices including IABP, Impella and ECMO available for management; the choice and timing of placement of these devices and decision making on listing for cardiac transplantation in the eligible patients. In addition, we will highlight the importance of team based inter-disciplinary care including use of support services, including nutrition, rehabilitation, and palliative care, all of which has to come together in a transformative manner to get the best clinical outcomes in patients.
