Overview
HFSA 23rd Annual Scientific Meeting

SESSION 43 - Ten Simple Tips: How to Best Treat Volume Overload in Acute HF

Sep 16, 2019 1:15pm - Sep 16, 2019 2:45pm
Session Description
The session will focus on congestion and the various approaches to decongest patients hospitalized for acute heart failure. Issues related to the speed and extent of volume removal in patients with acute heart failure will be addressed. Contemporary use of diuretics, vasodilators, inotropes, and extracorporeal removal of fluid and sodium will be described. Additionally, emerging technologies will be highlighted.
Learning Objectives

As a result of this educational session, the learner will be able to:

  1. Estimate and monitor the speed and extent of fluid removal required for patients hospitalized for acute heart failure with volume overload.
  2. Compare the effectiveness and safety of various diuretic strategies used to decongest patients hospitalized for volume overload.
  3. Identify appropriate patients for whom IV vasodilators and/or inotropic support should be considered to augment decongestion in patients with volume overload.
  4. Describe the role of renal replacement and device therapies to remove fluid in patients hospitalized for volume overload.
  5. Evaluate the evolving role of interventional approaches & devices used to remove fluid in patients hospitalized for acute heart failure with volume overload.
